GPS vehicle tracking

Independent project · 2023 · Full Stack Developer

A vehicle-tracking application needs to connect location updates with a useful view of where a vehicle has been. This independent project combined an Android application, Firebase and a web dashboard to bring tracking and route review into one system.

The problem and scope

A stream of GPS coordinates is only one part of a tracking tool. The web interface also needs to help someone select a period, view a route and calculate distance. The project connected mobile location information to those dashboard functions.

My contribution

  • Built a web dashboard with date-based filtering and route visualization.
  • Added distance calculations alongside the route history.
  • Used Firebase as the backend connecting the Android application and web interface.

How the parts connect

  1. 01Android application
  2. 02Firebase backend
  3. 03Web dashboard
  4. 04Date filters, route history and distance calculations

Why this is relevant to business software

The relevant pattern is a shared data source serving both mobile collection and an operational dashboard. Similar integration needs can appear in field-service or delivery software; those are potential applications to scope, rather than claimed deployments of this project.

What a business deployment would need

  • Agree how location is collected, who can see it and how long it is needed.
  • Test gaps, delayed updates and duplicate points using representative journeys.
  • Define distance-calculation rules and check them against known routes.
  • Scope mobile permissions, access controls, operating costs and support before a rollout.

Project context

This is an independent engineering project, not a client case study. It demonstrates the mobile-to-dashboard integration described here. A new deployment would need its own validation; this walkthrough does not establish a customer's savings, uptime or fleet capacity.
