n8n workflow analysis
Personal productivity project · 2024 · AI Agent Developer
Before automating a business process, it helps to examine the workflow itself. This personal tool analyzes n8n workflows across four validation layers and classifies findings by severity, with an auto-fix engine for supported issues.
The problem and scope
A workflow can have more than one kind of problem: its structure may be invalid, its meaning may be inconsistent or its design may raise security and performance concerns. Grouping these findings gives the developer a clearer starting point for review.
My contribution
- Built a Python workflow-analysis tool for n8n.
- Organized validation into schema, security, semantic and performance layers.
- Added severity-based issue classification and an auto-fix engine.

Why this is relevant to business software
This work is relevant to teams maintaining automations that need review before changes are released. It illustrates workflow analysis and structured findings. As an executed example: running the analyzer against a real 16-node Security Infrastructure Automation Workflow found 11 issues, five of which its schema-fix layer corrected automatically (removing stray workflow active/versionId fields, two credential-binding removals and an added pinData), leaving six remaining findings — one no-error-handling note spanning ten nodes, four informational warnings on HTTP nodes whose authentication field was absent, and one credential-heuristic match that on review was a mode-name string, not a real secret. A separate diagnostic run also surfaced a genuine limitation: because the missing-authentication check tests truthiness, a node explicitly set to authentication: "none" evades it and gets mislabeled by the credential heuristic instead, so the tool does not reliably catch every explicit no-auth configuration. The checks needed for a particular business still depend on its integrations, data and operational rules.
What a business deployment would need
- Define the n8n version, node types and integrations the checks must support.
- Use known valid and invalid workflows to evaluate missed issues and false alarms.
- Review proposed changes and test workflow behavior before production use.
- Keep a recoverable workflow version and agree who can approve changes.
Project context
This is a personal productivity project, not a client case study. Analysis and suggested fixes do not prove a workflow is secure or correct. This walkthrough makes no guarantee of detecting every issue or of delivering a specific business result.
